Boats Monitoring on the Kocher
- Owner Regional Council Stuttgart – Environmental Department
- Project period 04/2014 - 12/2014
As part of the management plan for bird sanctuaries along the river Kocher, a boat traffic monitoring was carried out. The predominant objective of the management plan is to maintain the kingfisher’s current population size in the long term. Studies have shown that, among other factors, boating on the Kocher represents a substantial impairment to the bird. Against this background, a quantitative and qualitative monitoring of boat operation on the Kocher was carried out and evaluated. In this context, three different types of boats were observed and the number of people onboard recorded on 10 discrete days representing typical working days, weekends and holidays. The behavior of boaters and their compliance with applicable sailing rules on the Kocher were surveyed at eight different sections of the river. Among others, the frequenting level at various sections and the temporal distribution of boat traffic were evaluated.
