The study investigated and identified Intersection design and control variants, which improved accessibility through the Gewerbestraße, optimized traffic safety for turning vehicles and ensured the safe crossing of the main road for pedestrians. Traffic counts in the study area were used as a basis for planning and design. Furthermore, the expected traffic volume for the planned retirement home as well as the effects of new settlements were combined with the counted traffic into a forecast volume which was used to determine the Level of Service (LOS) of the transport network. Several intersection control alternatives were comparatively evaluated. For a two of the traffic control alternatives, an intersection design was completed and tested in terms of traffic-efficiency. One variant was then modeled with a microscopic traffic simulation model to show and further evaluate its functionality in terms of handling the expected traffic volumes.
